Maa Saraswati is often depicted as a beautiful woman in pure white dress; she seated on a white lotus which signs of light, knowledge and truth. The four arms denote her omnipresence. The two front arms indicate her activity in the physical world and the two back arms signify her presence in the spiritual world. The four hands represent the four elements of the inner personality. A hansa or swan is often located to next of her feet. Hansa is a sacred bird which is offered a mixture of milk and water. It symbolizes the discrimination between the good from the bad. Due to her association with the swan, she is also referred to as hansvahini, which means “she who has a hansa as her vehicle”. The swan is also a symbolism for spiritual perfection and moksha.
